House Passes War Powers Vote to Pull US Forces from Iran
The resolution, introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks — the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee — marks the latest and most consequential move by lawmakers to rein in Trump's war-making authority, an effort that has steadily attracted growing Republican support in recent weeks.
Meeks was unsparing in his assessment of the administration's military campaign following the vote's passage.
"Trump's war has failed to accomplish the Trump administration's stated goals with respect to Iran. If anything, it has pushed a diplomatic resolution of Iran's nuclear program further away," he said.
The New York Democrat further argued that continued military action had eroded US credibility at the negotiating table while handing Tehran a platform to flex its strategic leverage over the Strait of Hormuz.
Meeks framed the resolution's passage as a defining political moment, pointing to a shifting tide within GOP ranks.
"The passage of this WPR today signals a significant turning point: more and more Republicans are listening to their constituents who do not want another open-ended war in the Middle East," he said.
With the resolution now heading to the Senate, Meeks issued a direct challenge to the upper chamber — and to Trump himself.
"If he won't clean up his own mess, Congress will," he said, calling on the Senate to swiftly take up the measure and send an unambiguous message to the White House that "enough is enough."
Democrats have pursued parallel legislative efforts in both chambers to curtail Trump's war powers, with Wednesday's House vote representing the sharpest and most bipartisan pushback yet.
