Iran Lawmaker Says Strait of Hormuz Won’t Return to Pre-War Conditions

(MENAFN) A senior Iranian lawmaker has stated that the Strait of Hormuz will not return to its previous conditions, amid ongoing shipping restrictions in the strategic waterway and a reported US naval blockade affecting Iranian ports, according to reports.

Ali Nikzad, second deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament, said the situation would remain unchanged, attributing the stance to directives from Iran’s top leadership.

“We will by no means return the Strait of Hormuz to its previous state, because this is an order from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution,” Nikzad said, according to a news agency.

He also criticised recent remarks by US President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s nuclear program, referencing past US strikes and statements about Iranian nuclear facilities.

“Didn’t (US President Donald) Trump, after bombing Fordo and Natanz, say that everything had been destroyed and Iran no longer had a nuclear program? Yet now he says he will not accept Iran having nuclear capability. Who is Trump in the world to decide this?” he added, according to reports.

The comments come amid heightened regional tensions following a conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel that began on Feb. 28, as described in the reports. Iranian authorities have maintained restrictions related to the Strait of Hormuz, while US naval activity has reportedly increased in nearby waters.

Earlier diplomatic efforts in Islamabad failed to produce an agreement between Washington and Tehran, following a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire on April 8 that was later extended, according to reports.

Negotiations are reportedly continuing indirectly, with key unresolved issues including the status of the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on Iranian ports, and concerns over Iran’s nuclear enrichment program.
