Iran’s BIran's Qalibaf Set for Talks with U.S. Vance in Islamabad

(MENAFN) Iran is dispatching Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf to lead its negotiating delegation in high-stakes talks with US Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad, Pakistan, set to take place on Friday, an Iranian news agency reported Wednesday.

According to the report, Tehran is entering the negotiations armed with a comprehensive 10-point framework that extends well beyond the nuclear file, folding in broader regional security concerns — a scope that signals Iran's intent to pursue a sweeping diplomatic settlement rather than a narrowly defined nuclear agreement.

Also on the table will be the sprawling architecture of primary and secondary sanctions that have strangled Iran's economy for roughly 45 years, the agency noted.

The talks are a direct outgrowth of Tuesday's ceasefire announcement, in which US President Donald Trump confirmed he agreed to "suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks" — a decision he stressed is "subject to" Iran committing to the complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran moved swiftly to address that condition. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi pledged safe passage through the strategically vital waterway for the duration of the ceasefire, contingent on coordination with Iranian armed forces. Araghchi added that Iran would halt "defensive operations" provided that offensive strikes against the country cease entirely.

The Friday meeting in Islamabad marks the most consequential direct diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran in years, with the outcome likely to determine whether the fragile two-week truce evolves into a durable framework — or collapses under the weight of decades-old grievances.
