Red Cross Seeks USD51.5M to Expand Humanitarian Aid Efforts in Iran
The funding initiative is intended to support relief operations led by the Iranian Red Crescent Society over the next 16 months. The program aims to assist nearly 5 million people living in 30 provinces affected by the conflict, particularly those facing infrastructure damage, potential displacement, and interruptions to vital services.
"With humanitarian needs growing sharply with every passing day, this Emergency Appeal will help scale up lifesaving assistance and get support to those most affected," Maria Martinez, IFRC head of delegation in Iran, said in a statement.
Relief efforts by the Iranian Red Crescent began after hostilities intensified on Feb. 28. Reports indicate that 529 branches across the country are currently involved in response activities spanning 197 cities. More than 2,100 emergency teams have been deployed, supported by over 6,500 staff members and volunteers.
These teams are engaged in various emergency operations, including search and rescue missions, medical assistance, and direct support to communities affected by the conflict. In addition, a nationwide hotline has been established and has already received thousands of calls from individuals seeking mental health and psychosocial support.
The emergency appeal is expected to finance a wide range of humanitarian services. These include temporary shelter, distribution of relief items, healthcare assistance, water and sanitation services, and psychological support programs.
To support immediate relief efforts, the federation has already released 1.5 million Swiss francs—about $1.9 million—from its Disaster Response Emergency Fund, according to reports.
