US Senator is Concerned About Potential Ground Troop Deployment in Iran
"I emerged from this briefing as dissatisfied and angry as I have from any past briefing in my 15 years in Senate," said Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, speaking after attending the Senate Armed Services Committee session on US-Israeli strikes in Iran. He added that his questions, including inquiries about the financial cost of the conflict, had gone unanswered.
"We seem to be on a path toward deploying American troops on the ground in Iran to accomplish any of the potential objectives," Blumenthal warned, describing this as his primary concern.
US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of sending troops, stating in previous remarks that such a move would be considered "if necessary."
Blumenthal also suggested that Russia appears to be providing Iran with "actively and intensively" intelligence support, with China potentially assisting as well. "American people deserve to know much more than this administration has told them," he added.
His comments contrast with assurances from US officials that Russian President Vladimir Putin had informed the US leadership that Moscow is not sharing intelligence with Iran on American military targets.
The warning comes amid heightened Middle East tensions following joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which have reportedly resulted in over 1,200 deaths, including Iran’s former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Pentagon reports indicate around 140 US service members have been wounded during the first ten days of the campaign, with eight killed and eight still severely injured.
