Iran, Russia Set to Conduct Joint Naval Drills

(MENAFN) Iran and Russia are set to conduct joint naval exercises Thursday in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean, as regional military activity intensifies alongside fragile nuclear diplomacy with Washington.

Iranian naval commander Captain Hassan Maqsoudlou confirmed the operation, stating that the combined drill between the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy and the Russian Federation Navy would span the Gulf of Oman and adjacent northern Indian Ocean waters, according to an Iranian state news agency.

Maqsoudlou said the exercise is designed to "expand joint maritime cooperation and strengthen coordination" between the two navies in planning and carrying out combined operations.

The news agency reported that staging the maneuvers alongside broader drills by Iran's armed forces signals both nations' attentiveness to evolving dynamics in the region, underscoring their shared commitment to countering unilateralism and bolstering the security of maritime trade routes.

Russia's Navy Force Commander Captain Alexey Sergeev echoed that posture, declaring: "We are ready to hold joint exercises in any region," the news agency reported.

The announcement coincides with a separate military drill launched Monday by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating friction with the United States. An IRGC public relations statement identified the operation as the "Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz" exercise, designed to evaluate the operational readiness of its naval forces.

Just one day later, Tehran and Washington held a second round of indirect nuclear talks in Geneva, brokered by Oman. The latest session follows an earlier round of back-channel negotiations hosted by Muscat on Feb. 6, as American forces continued a visible military buildup across the region.
