Palestine, UN Officials Slam Israel’s Actions in West Bank as Annexation

(MENAFN) Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, joined representatives from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab Group in strongly criticizing recent Israeli actions aimed at consolidating control over the West Bank, warning that the steps effectively amount to annexation of occupied Palestinian territory.

Addressing reporters Tuesday at UN headquarters in New York, Mansour declared: "We are gathered here today in order to express our outrage and condemnation for what the Israeli cabinet decided yesterday with regard to what will amount to the annexation of the land of the Palestinian people, especially in the West Bank,"

He explained that the Palestinian delegation has begun formal diplomatic efforts within the United Nations to oppose the Israeli move and seek its reversal through coordinated international measures.

According to Mansour, a detailed letter outlining Palestine’s stance has already been distributed to members of the UN Security Council, as well as to the UN secretary-general and the president of the General Assembly.

He further noted that he briefed the current Security Council president on Monday afternoon and expressed expectations that the Council would act, saying Palestine anticipates it will "to shoulder its responsibility to defend international law, including human rights law and humanitarian law."

In the coming days, Palestinian representatives plan to intensify discussions with Security Council members, including both elected and permanent members, in addition to consultations with the UN secretary-general, in an effort to mobilize action.

"There is a Prime Minister of an extreme government coming to Washington, DC, challenging everyone that he is going to impose annexation and take the land of the Palestinian people," he said, adding that "this is another test before all of these processes, whether (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu will succeed against all of us, or whether we collectively succeed in defending what we agreed to."
