Britain Targets Iranian Figures with New Sanctions

(MENAFN) Britain unveiled a new round of punitive measures Monday, targeting ten individuals and one entity for their alleged involvement in suppressing recent demonstrations across Iran, the country's foreign office announced in an official statement.

The sanctions list includes high-ranking figures such as Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, Lorestan Province Police Chief Mohammad Reza Hashemifar, Public Security Police Chief Seyed Majid Feiz Jafari, and Fars Province commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Yadollah Bouali, alongside multiple additional military and judicial officials, the statement detailed.

Britain has now imposed upward of 550 sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities, including blanket restrictions against the entire IRGC, according to the foreign office declaration.

The British action follows coordinated restrictive measures implemented in recent days by both the United States and the European Union, representing a unified Western response.

Widespread protests erupted throughout Iranian cities beginning in late December, initially triggered by the rial's precipitous collapse. What began as peaceful demonstrations rapidly deteriorated into violent confrontations, resulting in casualties and extensive damage to public infrastructure including mosques, government facilities, and banking institutions.

Tehran has attributed the civil unrest to interference by the United States and Israel. Following an anti-Iran resolution passed by the European Parliament, Iranian officials denounced the measure as "meddlesome."
