Australia Imposes New Sanctions on Iranian Officials, Networks

(MENAFN) Australia on Tuesday announced fresh sanctions targeting senior Iranian officials and financial networks associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to reports.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the measures affect 20 individuals and three organizations connected to the IRGC. “This announcement builds on the Albanese Government’s listing of the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism and our sanctions on more than 200 Iranian individuals and entities,” she said in a statement.

Since the program began, Australia has sanctioned over 200 Iranian individuals and entities, including more than 100 linked to the IRGC, as stated by reports.

The move follows a recent US Treasury announcement of additional sanctions on senior Iranian officials and financial networks, and an EU designation of the IRGC as a “terrorist organization,” which drew strong objections from Iranian civilian and military leaders. Tehran subsequently labeled European armies as “terrorist groups.”

Tensions between Iran and European nations have intensified amid ongoing domestic protests in Iran, with European officials condemning what they describe as a “crackdown on protesters,” according to reports.
