Spain Backs EU Sanctions on Iran

(MENAFN) Spain has voiced its support for listing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization within the European Union, according to the Spanish foreign minister on Thursday. Madrid also firmly endorses "all sanctions" imposed on Tehran in response to its internal crackdown.

Ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Jose Manuel Albares reaffirmed that Spain’s stance is consistent and resolute. He stated, "Spain supports all the sanctions on Iran at this moment," specifying that this explicitly covers "of course those that refer to the inclusion on the list of terrorist groups of the Revolutionary Guard."

Albares emphasized that the current circumstances in Iran leave little room for deliberation. He noted, "When we see the situation in Iran, when we see a blind, indiscriminate repression, arbitrary detentions, a situation for Iranian women that worries us terribly," it becomes both the EU’s "responsibility and, if you allow me, obligation" to intervene.

From the beginning, Spain has insisted on the respect for "freedom of expression and the freedom of peaceful demonstration of all Iranians," Albares added, while commending the "great courage" of protesters. He further called for an end to arbitrary detentions and cautioned that "any execution would be an authentic red line for Spain and for Europe."
