UN's Antonio Guterres Urges Iran to Show Restraint
"The Secretary-General is shocked by the reports of violence and excessive use of force by the Iranian authorities against protesters in multiple locations across the Islamic Republic of Iran, resulting in scores of deaths," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
Guterres stressed that all Iranians must be able to voice their "grievances" peacefully without intimidation, insisting that the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly guaranteed under international law must be "fully respected and protected."
The UN leader also urged measures to restore access to information, including the reactivation of communications services.
The London-based monitoring group NetBlocks reported Sunday that Iran has remained offline for more than 72 hours, marking the fourth consecutive day of a nationwide internet shutdown.
Protests first erupted on December 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar over the steep decline of the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions, later spreading to multiple cities.
The U.S.-based rights organization HRANA stated that 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed, with more than 10,600 arrests, though official casualty figures have not been released.
